I was driving in Thanatos Jonesâ car. Okay, I was a passenger in his car, same difference.
It smelled like him.
The leather, the doors, the windows â his presence was so damn powerful, it could mark innate matter.
And that, of course, wasnât to mention the man himself as he drove beside me. There was no reason for him to drive. He was a demon, for Godâs sake â he had enough magic to make a car drive itself with nothing more than a click of his fingers.
He was still driving, though, and for the stupidest damn reason, I kept repeating to myself that he looked hot.
It was in the way he was slouched back in his seat, his arms straight, his fingers loose, and yet his command of the car perfect. It was in the way that he would glance at me casually every few seconds, his gaze slipping down my face, just one corner of his lips curling about half a millimeter.
It was in his scent, in his radiant heat â it was in Thanatos himself.
When Iâd left Hell and this bastard behind, Iâd never intended to return. And though I could never see myself going back to the Devil, I had to admit I was being drawn back to Thanatosâ
No, you donât, girl, I screamed at myself in my thoughts. Donât you dare finish that sentence. You are not being drawn to him. Heâs putting on a show, using every manipulative skill he has. This is a game to him. Get what you can, then leave the bastard in the dust.
I tried to settle back in my seat as I attempted to let that thought settle, but neither worked. I couldnât get comfortable â my shoulders were still too tense with the idea of who we were going to see.
I clutched hold of my seatbelt, my fingers curling in hard, my nails dragging across the stiff fabric.
âThere is no need to be scared. Not while weâre out here, beyond the clutches of that pocket of time. Sit back and relax.â
âIâm not scared,â I said through stiff teeth.
âTell that to my seatbelt.â
âIâm just going over the odds of this situation, and they arenât in my favor.â
âYou leave the odds to me,â Thanatos said as he smoothly changed lanes while all the while staring my way. âWe demons have a way of gaming every system.â
âI donât need a lesson on the capability of the Devil â Iâve met him too. Not the point. I justâ¦â I trailed off. If Iâd been trying to convince Thanatos that I wasnât scared, the slight waver in my voice gave it all away.
He shot me a knowing smile as we pulled into the street where Mortimerâs Cathedral was located.
Instantly my stomach twisted as it reminded me of the last time Iâd been here. That healing bath⦠the knowledge of it was still trapped in my damn bones. It had been categorically the most glorious thing I had ever experienced. More than that, though, it had
